Though cricket is more popular in our country, hockey is our national game. Pakistan has won many honors in this game. We are proud of our great hockey players.

I have seen many hockey matches but the match that I am going to describe was a memorable one. I can never forget it. It was played between Pakistan and Germany at Pakistan stadium recently. It was a very interesting match.

The match started at 9:00 am. Both the teams entered the playground wearing their colourful uniforms. They were loudly cheered by the crowd. Asad Bajwa and Samiullah supervised the match.

During the first half, no goal was scored by any team. Our forwards kept the ball in their possession. They earned four penalty corners but of no avail. The other team also earned two penalty corners but to no avail.

“The reward lies in playing the game and enjoying its thrill, not the victory.”

During the second half, the Germans scored a goal. Our team made a fierce attack. Our captain with a lucky scoop in the “D” put the ball into the net. Both the teams were equal now. Every player was playing with a zeal. Our center forward made a rush and scored a goal. We cheered our team. Our opponents did not lose heart. The game became very exciting.

Both the teams scored more goals. Finally, our team won the match by one goal. This victory brought honour to our country. Our joys new no bounds. We greatly applauded and praised our players.

“Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.” (Winston Churchill)

Text (Version 2): Essay on a Hockey Match with Quotations for 10th Class

Sports and games constitute a major part of the co- and extra-curricular activities in educational institutions across the world. The previous year, I witnessed an unusually thrilling sports event. Our school organized an inter-board hockey tournament. Our team lost the match in the semifinal. So, the final match was played between the teams of Government Higher Secondary School Sahiwal and Government Higher Secondary School Lahore.

“Hockey is a twin sibling of cricket. Those passionate about cricket watch the hockey match with equal enthusiasm”.

At 9:00 am sharp, the referee blew the whistle. Both the teams had already entered the playground. The match started with great excitement and thrill. Each team looked to be determined and optimistic to win the match. It was a fierce competition between the rival teams. All the spectators were enjoying the match. They were shouting slogans in favor of their favorite team.

“It is the thrill during the match – not the victory at the end – that inspires hockey fans to buy expensive tickets and stay in the ground for hours.”

During the first ten minutes, the Sahiwal team remained dominant. Their center forward was quite a nimble player. He just intercepted the ball and reached the opponents’ D area, but the goalkeeper of the Lahore team defended well.

In the remaining time of the first half, both the teams played well. Only a minute before the end of the first half, the Sahiwal team made a superb move. Their center forward was successful in hitting the ball into the goal. Right after that, the referee blew the whistle to declare the end of the first half. In the second half, the Lahore team attacked well to equal the score. Finally, they scored the equalizer with only ten minutes to go.

Now the match was in full swing. Each team was trying hard to score the winning goal. But no team could succeed in its effort to gain victory over the opponent. At last, the second half of the match also ended. Apparently, it had ended in a draw.

“The reward lies in playing the game and enjoying its thrill, not the victory.”

After that, extra 15 minutes were given to the team to decide the winner. Surprisingly, no team could score a goal during that time too. Now the match had become sensational and suspenseful.

Finally, each team was given five penalty strokes to decide the match. Both the teams scored four out of five attempts. Now the death penalty stroke started. The first one was blocked by the goalkeeper of the Lahore team. Then they succeeded in hitting the ball into the goal and were victorious. Instantly, there was a round of applause for the winning team. The memories of the match are still fresh in my mind.

My serene town is small, but it enjoys a great reputation as a sports hub. It is a renowned center of hockey in the country. It has produced numerous leading hockey players of international fame. That is why the federal government has constructed a magnificent and grandiose hockey stadium in this area. Astroturf – an artificial surface that looks like grass and is meant for playing sports on – has been laid here to promote the national game of Pakistan. Often very interesting matches are played here.

“Hockey is a twin sibling of cricket. Those passionate about cricket watch the hockey match with equal enthusiasm”.

Last year the final match of the school tournament was played on this ground. I was playing for Government High School. Our rival team was Government Social Welfare School, better known as Welfare School. We knew that four or five players of the opponents belonged to the families of famous players.

“Practice like you have never won the match; play like you have never lost it.”

Our in-charge and coach had a long discussion the day before. They had fully analyzed the strong and weak points of the Welfare School team. Each player of our team was individually instructed about his active role in the game. Our coach asked us to set up a trap for our opponents. I played as the right half of my team. I had to be vigilant as the rival left out was very quick, and he was the top scorer of the tournament.

The match started at its scheduled time. I remembered my duty perfectly well. The opponents were mainly relying on their left out. Most of the passes were going to him. Almost every time, I checked the ball before reaching him. The result was that the Welfare School hockey team could not make the penetration (score a goal).

“A good player plays where the ball is; a great player plays where the ball is going to be.”

That frustrated them, and two or three more players came this way to counter me. This was the trap we had laid for them. Now our left out and left in were almost free. I was working very hard as it was necessary for my team. In this attempt, I received minor injuries also, but I played with determination, courage, and persistence. This inspired my teammates.

The first half was going to end when I got a chance. I scooped the ball towards our left out, who was unguarded. Our left out and left in had an understanding. Together they dribbled (moved with several short kicks) the ball with perfect accuracy. In this process, they successfully dodged the right full-back and reached the D. The lone goalkeeper was never in a position to stop these tigers. The result was the goal. The Welfare School supporters could not believe that. After two or three minutes, the whistle announced halftime.

In the second half, we changed our policy. We tried to keep the ball with us as much as was possible. Now we were playing with four forwards. We also kept the ball in the half of the opponents. That gave us the chance to have more attacks on their goals.

This plan again worked, and our center forward succeeded in getting a short corner. Our left full-back was an expert in converting the penalty corners. In the D, an indirect pass was given to him that he calmly pushed into the goal.

(Conclusion – Essay on a Hockey Match with Quotations for 10th Class)

Now our lead was two to nil. It was enough to demoralize the opponents. So, we won the final and the trophy. Our captain and in-charge praised our team very much for our valiant efforts and presence of mind. On this victory, our school principal announced the next day as the holiday.

“Success and failure are the part and parcel of any sports event. The losers can take it as the first step to success; the winners will have to struggle more to maintain it.”
